Lake Skadar is accessible by car or bus, with Virpazar being a popular starting point. Driving is convenient, and I chose this method for my visit. However, I recommend using Google Maps or a reliable sat nav, as the turn-off to the main part of the lake, where the boat trips depart, isn't well signposted.
For those preferring public transport, regular bus services run from major Montenegrin cities such as Podgorica, Budva and Kotor. Virpazar is well-connected by bus and is a central hub for lake tours.
Best Time to Visit:
The best time to visit Lake Skadar is during the late spring (April to June) and early autumn (September to October). During these seasons, the weather is mild and pleasant, ideal for outdoor activities such as boating, birdwatching, and hiking. Summer can be quite hot, but it is also the peak season for tourists. Winter visits are less common due to cooler temperatures and reduced tourist services, but the lake's serene beauty still offers a peaceful retreat.

Boat tours and cruises are among the most popular activities at Lake Skadar. When I visited, I booked a boat ride upon arrival, which cost me 20 euros for an hour-long cruise - although prices can vary anything from 15 to 35 euros as some offer refreshments and tours to monasteries. Several operators offer guided tours departing from Virpazar, exploring the lake’s pretty waters. These tours typically last between one to three hours and provide opportunities to see the lake's diverse wildlife and scenic landscapes. Popular cruise routes include visits to the monasteries on the islands, birdwatching hotspots, and secluded beaches. If you’re travelling during peak season then I would recommend booking a boat trip in advance.

The best spots for bird watching are around the lake's wetlands and reed beds, particularly near Virpazar and the northern shores.
